Rules and recommendations
This may be a dull part to read, yet an extremely important part of the succesfullness of a trip. You may see the most amazing species, but if you get hurt (or end up in a life-threatening situation), than that will set the tone for the entire trip. We want to provide you with some important tips, so you can arm yourself and minimize potential risks during the trips:
1. Follow instructions: the tour guide knows the terrain and may have more experience with the animals.
2. Get your vaccines, use insect repellent and wash yourself regularly: Make sure that you have the necessary vaccinations. These are yellow fever, tetanus and hepatitis. An optional vaccination is the rabies vaccination, as bats may carry rabies. This brings us to the washing regularly; make sure to wash yourself before you get into your hammock or bed, as vampire bats like to nibble on dirty feet. To prevent insects from transmitting certain pathogens, such as dengue, malaria and leishmanisis, make sure to use insect repellent. Insects repellents with DEET are the most effective ones.
3. Respect the flora and fauna: Keep a safe distance from animals while photographing or observing, unless the tour guide allows otherwise. Stay on the designated trails, and above all; do not collect samples of any kind.
4. Use of substances: Although we don't want to forbid the use of alcohol in your free time, please make sure to drink responsibly.
5. Travel insurance: Make sure that you have the right level of cover, and that these trips are included in the package to prevent unexpected bills.
6. Be fit: you may hike through rough terrain and face environmental challenges, so being fit and healthy before you go on a trip will help you get the most pleasant experience.
7. Understand nature: Increase your chances to see certain wildlife by, for example, booking your trip during rainy season or a new moon.
8. Above all, use commonsense: Wear rubber boots or snake boots, watch your step and don't wander off alone.
