Nassau mountain

The Nassau mountain is situated east of the Brokopondo lake in Suriname close to the French Guiana border. It is an isolated, L-shaped mountain ridge (400 kilometers squared), characterized by its plateaus consisting of consolidated ferrite and bauxite. The Nassau mountain contains four flat-lying plateaus, which are found between elevations of 500 to 564 meters above sea level. Nassau mountain lies within the central rainfall belt of Suriname, and receives a lot of rainfall (2750-3000 mm per year). The vegetation types occurring on Nassau mountain include high dryland rainforest on laterite plateaus, high dryland rainforest on slopes, mountain savanna forest and vegetation on and near rocky creek beds. There is very few tourism in this area, it has however so much potential. This small mountain has a really high biodiversity and quite a lot of endemics! |
