Brownsberg Nature Park
Brownsberg Nature Park is the only nature park of Suriname and is protected because of its high biodiversity. A camp is built on the top of this 500m high mountain. Here, it is possible to sleep in beds or in hammocks. A number of routes are plotted from this camp to a variety of waterfalls and creeks. The bauxite cap on this mountain works as a sponge and is thus very suitable for frogs and caecilians. Sites like these provide habitats for many threatened species and species endemic to the Guiana Shield. As virtually no hunting and other disturbances occur on the steep slopes and the upper plateau of the Brownsberg, its appears to function as a wildlife refuge.
Accommodation type: Beds or Hammocks
Typical species for the Brownsberg are the Botrops atrox and the Ameiva ameiva, hunting for their prey species that are attracted to the human activity on the plateau. The many roads and paths have pools of stagnant water which are suitble habitats for Pipa aspera and the larvae of certain amphibians such as Rhinella martyii and Amereega trivittata. The smaller creeks with dense vegetation are perfect for e.g. Atelopus hoogmoedi, Xenopholis scalaris, Anomaloglossus surinamensis. |
