Welcome to Herping Suriname! Did you know that Suriname is the worlds most forested country? It has over 96% forest! With the majority of the inhabitants living in or around Paramaribo, Suriname offers lots of pristine areas to the animal kingdom. Every year many animal species, new to science, are discovered here, including reptiles and amphibians! Swamps, savannas, mountains (some with unusual bauxite caps), inselbergs, primary and secondary forest inhabit life of many reptiles and amphibians. Our Destinations cover all of these habitats! The Guiana shield houses more than 269 species of amphibians with 146 (54%) being endemic to this area. Currently 104 species of amphibians are discovered in Suriname (98 anurans and 6 caecilians). At least 35 amphibian species that are endemic to (parts of) the Guiana shield and at least 6 amphibian species are completely endemic to Suriname! A. Abuys reveals about 110 species of snakes in Suriname of which 12 are endemic to the Guiana shield and 5 are endemic to Suriname! This all making Suriname a very attractive location for herping! Would you like to combine destinations and habitats to increase the number of species during your trip? Check our Planned Itineraries.
